Call them ride the codes.
Brooklyn may be shorthand for “cool” on every continent but Antarctica so far, but actual Brooklyn fared much less well on a new list of the hottest blocks on the Third Rock, with only one odd choice from the Borough of Churches.
The arbiters of taste at Timeout, which has just published a list of the 38 most beautiful neighborhoods in the world, seem to be mostly long The United States, in fact – only one area in the Land of the Free, way out on the West Coast, was allowed into the Top 10 this year.
To really get in with the crowd these days, you need to head to France’s second city – Marseille’s artsy Notre-Dame du Mont area took first prize in the chic stakes for its “rebellious spirit”. and “the cheerful, laid-back feel of a local market,” the list’s editors wrote.
“Named after a church, this unholy area is made up of colorful streets, graffiti-covered alleyways, maple-lined streets and winding stairs leading down from the Cours Julien,” the experts explained.
New arrivals from Paris, who discovered the charms of the lean city en masse during the pandemic, can be found “mingling with a motley crowd of punks and their dogs, women in colorful clothes and salty old sailors drinking 8.6 beer ,” the writers assured.
Of course, “cool” is a subjective term – do you give more weight to bars, street art or cafes with scenes? However, Timeout defined hip neighborhoods as areas that reflect “the best of their cities — culture, community spirit, nightlife, food and drink — all condensed into one vibey, walkable neighborhood.”
To compile this Mount Rushmore of radical urban sectors, the lifestyle publication had its global network of editors and writers offer their picks, before vetting them against the area’s “one-of-a-kind local flavor,” among other criteria.
They then compiled them into a list of 38 places that are suspected to be cooler than the other side of the pillow.
“This year’s list is a real mix of surprising, overlooked neighborhoods that are just coming into their own and historically ‘cool’ neighborhoods that are experiencing a renaissance,” Grace Beard, travel editor at Time Out, told CNN Travel.
In second place was Mers Sultan, in Casablanca, Morocco, who apparently is an epitome of equestrianism because, well, it’s not trying to be.
“It’s still real, with a trendy cafe (or anything trendy, really) on the horizon,” the publication said, hailing Mers Sultan as “the favorite place to live for Casablanca’s young artists and workers culture sector”.
Rounding out the five coolest enclaves were Pererenan in Bali, Indonesia, Seongsu-dong in Seoul, South Korea—billed as “Seoul’s Answer to Brooklyn”—and Kerns in Portland, Oregon.
Timeout said they liked the latter for its small-town vibe.
But while Kerns was the only US neighborhood in the top ten, it’s still a step up from last year’s ranking, which gave Home of The Brave an even colder shoulder last year, completely exasperated the country.
About halfway down the list of most popular areas, behind places like Warsaw, Poland and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, NYC is represented at no. 17 by Flatbush, called NYC’s “coolest neighborhood” for its mix of Caribbean cultures.
“You see this community thriving at places like Peppa’s Jerk Chicken, Lips Cafe and Bodega Lounge and, of course, at the annual West Indian Day Parade that dances down Eastern Parkway every Labor Day weekend,” wrote writer Shaye Weaver.
Other local spots on the list included Little River, Miami (No. 12), East Hollywood, Los Angeles (No. 26) Mount Pleasant, Washington DC (No. 29) Brewerytown, Philadelphia (No. 32), Logan Square, Chicago (No. 34) and Union Square in Somerville, Mass. (no. 38).
